PLAGUE: THRIPS
Thrips are winged insects and are less than a millimeter in size.
The larvae are mobile and begin feeding on the underside of the leaf immediately after hatching. As they suck out the plant cells, silvery-gray spots develop on the leaves, which are then covered in black dots (the excrement). At higher densities, damage also occurs to flowers or fruit. Thrips populations can develop very rapidly.
NATURAL ENEMY: ASSAULT BUGS
The predatory bug Orius is a flattened insect of about 3 mm in size with a characteristic long piercing snout.
This agile glutton feeds on all stages of thrips. When thrips are absent,
it also feeds on pollen and other insects, such as whiteflies, aphids and spider mites.
At high prey densities they kill more than they actually need for food.
These predatory bugs are supplied in packages sufficient for treating an area of 50 m2.
