PEST: FERN FUNGUS MOSQUITO
The sciarid fly is a 5mm long, black fly. It usually occurs in large numbers and lays its eggs in potting soil. The 5mm long, translucent white larvae survive in potting soil and attack the plant's root system. They often transmit pathogens as well. The feeding damage to the roots causes the plant to droop and can even wilt completely.
NATURAL ENEMY: NEMATODES
The nematodes Steinernema against the fern weevil are nematodes that are not visible to the eye,
which search for and enter the larvae of the fern fungus gnat in the potting soil, secreting a bacterium that kills the fern fungus gnat larva.
The nematodes also lay their eggs in the larvae of the sciarid fly. The nematodes are optimally active at a minimum potting soil temperature of 13°C. The nematodes are supplied in a clay solution, which should be dissolved in approximately 20 liters of water and then poured into the soil.
